The TANG Center

The UHS Tang Center is located a few short blocks from the law school at 2222 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA 94720,  510.642.2000.  Tang’s hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. during most of the the academic term. Urgent Care and other offices often have different hours, so please check the website for current hours.

The Tang Center provides comprehensive medical services to all registered Cal students whether or not they have the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Tang offers primary care, urgent care, and specialty clinics. Check the website for more information on fees for students (with and without SHIP).

Students can schedule appointments online or call 510.642.2000 between 8 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Check the website for more information on scheduling appointments with specialists and clinics.

Advice Nurse: 510.643.7197

An Advice Nurse is available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you are unsure whether you need to come in for care, call the Advice Nurse.

If you have an urgent medical or mental health problem that cannot wait until the Tang Center is open, call the After Hours Assistance Line at 510.643.7197 for immediate help. If you need to speak with a counselor urgently, you will be connected to the 24/7 counseling line.

 


Urgent Care

During most of the academic year, Tang’s Urgent Care center is open 8 a.m.- 6 p.m., Monday-Friday; and 9 a.m. -5 p.m. on Saturday. Last check-in is 30 minutes before closing so please arrive by 5:30 p.m. during the week and 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Hours are shortened during academic breaks, so check the website for current hours.

If the Tang Center is closed and you have an urgent medical or mental health problem that cannot wait until it opens, call After Hours Assistance at 510.643.7197 for immediate help. If you need to speak with a counselor urgently, you will be connected to the 24/7 counseling line.

If you can’t get to Urgent Care, or need a referral, Tang has a list of local Emergency rooms and Urgent Care Centers. Please note that hours frequently change, so call ahead to confirm before visiting.


Social Services

Tang’s Social Services provides confidential services and counseling to help students with managing problems that can emerge from illness such as financial, academic, legal, family concerns, and more. Social Services staff can also help you manage problems related to illness, pregnancy, substance abuse, relationship violence, sexual assault, or eating disorders.

The Social Services office is on the second floor of the Tang Center, Room 2280. Call 510.642.6074 or stop by  to make an appointment.


Vision

Vision care is available at either of the School of Optometry’s on-campus clinics: the Tang Center Eye Clinic and the Meredith Morgan Eye Center in Minor Hall. The Minor Hall clinic is open seven days a week. Both clinics are covered under the SHIP vision service plan. Students without SHIP should check the School of Optometry website for information on fees and insurance.

To make an appointment at the Tang Center clinic, call 510.643.2020. For the Minor Hall clinic, call 510.642.2020. You can also submit an appointment request online at the School of Optometry website.

For ocular emergencies when the clinic is closed, call 510.642.2020, 24 hours a day. After hours, you can also call 510.642.0992 for more direct service.


Dental

Students enrolled in SHIP receive dental coverage through Metlife PDP. Dental services are not provided through Tang, but students can select from local dentists listed on the MetLife website.


Pharmacy

The Tang Center Pharmacy is at 2222 Bancroft, first floor, 510.642.3249. Check the website for FAQs and information on refills

Other nearby pharmacies include CVS Drug Store on Shattuck and Bancroft, Walgreen’s on Telegraph near Bancroft, and Walgreen’s on Shattuck near the downtown Berkeley Bart station. Tang has assembled a list of East Bay pharmacies for your convenience.


Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

All students are automatically enrolled in the Berkeley Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). SHIP covers medical, counseling, prescription, vision and dental services. Coverage details and FAQs can are available on the website.

Students may waive the SHIP plan if they have comparable insurance that provides a required minimum level of benefits. More information, FAQs, and waiver deadlines are also available on the website. If you previously waived SHIP but your situation has changed, you may reverse your waiver with a waiver reversal form. Contact the SHIP office for more information.

The Tang Center has extensive health resources on its website including an index of health topics and pdf handouts on a wide range of health issues.

Cal Rec has the facilities and programs to keep you moving for greater fitness and health. Student membership is cheap and provides access to the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF), Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area (SCRA), Golden Bear Recreation Center (GBRC), Spieker Pool, and Hearst Pool.
