Berkeley Law won the 2026 National Patent Application Drafting Competition, besting nearly 50 other law school teams at the annual event. During the final round, held at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, Virginia, 2Ls Jeff Chen, Christopher Hong, Maddison Konway, and Michael Yang prevailed over the other regional round winners (Harvard, Villanova, Hamline, and Wisconsin). Coached by Van Pelt, Yi & James partner Michael Schallop, the team received hypothetical invention statements for which they searched prior art, prepared a specification, drafted claims, and presented their reasoning for patentability before a judges’ panel of patent examiners, practitioners, and other high-profile guests.
