Naomi M. Yitref, a Ph.D. candidate in our Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program, designed and taught a Legal Studies course this summer inspired by Berkeley Law’s Race and the Law graduation requirement. Its premise: If every future legal practitioner should understand how race has shaped American law and legal institutions, undergraduate legal studies students deserve that same foundation. Her syllabus moved from foundational law-and-society scholarship and critical legal theory to landmark case law and contemporary debates on policing, the carceral state, education, and migration. Encouraging students to examine each through an interdisciplinary lens and inviting them to challenge, refine, and build on the ideas discussed, Yitref says that “the response from students was deeply rewarding.”
