Foster care youth in California are more likely to attend low-performing schools, get suspended five times as much as other students, and have a 56% high school graduation rate compared to 85% statewide. The Foster Education Project, one of UC Berkeley Law’s 40 Student-Initiated Legal Services Projects, provides needed support. Members are paired with foster students to ensure they are placed appropriately, represented in disciplinary proceedings, and obtain services for disabilities or special needs. They also liaise with social workers, teachers, counselors, and other stakeholders.
