Student Francesca Hovagimian ’20, a former Ethics Bowl competitor and coach, co-wrote a New York Times op-ed on how traditional school debate competitions affect political discourse. It says such debates inhibit the type of listening and reasoning vital for a healthy democracy, stoke biased reasoning, and bolster the rigid, partisan nature of today’s political dialogue.
