Andrea Freeman ’06 won a James Beard Media Award and a Los Angeles Times Book Award for Ruin Their Crops on the Ground, which probes United States food policy and its role in advancing the nation’s racial hierarchy. A Southwestern Law School professor, Freeman (pictured with fellow food author and TV host Padma Lakshmi) is a regular guest in UC Berkeley Law Professor Molly Van Houweling’s Food Law & Policy class. Her pioneering food oppression theory studies how facially neutral food-related law, policy, and government action disproportionately harms marginalized communities.
