Berkeley Law and the Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law — March 2019

The Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law (ASIL), held each spring in Washington DC, is the largest and most important gathering of international law practitioners, policymakers, and scholars. This year’s edition on the theme of “International Law as an Instrument” was held on March 27-30, 2019.

Professor Saira Mohamed moderated a session on “Emerging Accountability Mechanisms: Innovative or Ineffective?.” Brian Egan (’00) spoke at a panel on “International Law as a Counterweight to Power Asymmetries in International Politics” and participated in a tabletop simulation on “Atrocity Prevention Decision-Making in the US Government.” The Miller Institute sponsored a March 29 reception, hosted by Professor Mohamed, for Berkeley Law students, faculty, and alumni who attended the Annual Meeting to honor the memory of former ASIL President and Berkeley Law Professor David Caron (’83).

In recognition of the important role that student-edited international law journals play in the dissemination of international legal scholarship, ASIL inaugurated a new program as part of the Annual Meeting: the International Law Review Editors Roundtable. Berkeley Law was represented at the Roundtable by Isaac Webb (’20), 2019-2020 Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Berkeley Journal of International Law (BJIL), who traveled to Washington DC with support from the Miller Institute.

Seven Berkeley Law students attend the Meeting as 2019 ASIL Fellows.  The fellowship, sponsored by the Miller Institute and the Advanced Degree Program Office, allows students the opportunity for knowledge and networking found at ASIL.  To read the reports on their experiences in Washington DC, click here.

Berkeley Law faculty and alumni have a rich history of leadership in ASIL. Professor Saira Mohamed and Jarrod Wong (’99) are members of the Executive Council, which serves as the governing body of the organization. Professor Laurel Fletcher is the co-chair of the Transitional Justice and Rule of Law Interest Group and Kate Jastram (’86), former Miller Institute Executive Director and Berkeley Law lecturer, is co-chair of the International Refugee Law Interest Group. Professor Katerina Linos and University of Chicago Professor Tom Ginsburg (JD ’97/PhD ‘99) sit on the Editorial Committee of the American Journal of International Law.

Berkeley Law, through the Miller Institute, is an Academic Partner of the American Society of International Law (ASIL), which provides recognition, participation, promotion, education, and access opportunities for our students, faculty, and alumni.

Article on life and work of Professor Richard M. Buxbaum

Richard M. Buxbaum, Jackson H. Ralston Professor of International Law (Emeritus), was profiled in an article by Berkeley News. Since arriving in Berkeley in 1961, he has helped navigate many hot-button campus issues over the past several decades, such as the Free Speech Movement, the Vietnam War, and the 1969 Third World Liberation Front.  And at age 88, he is among the oldest professors still teaching at UC Berkeley.
