Celebrating the 2023 International Law Certificate Awardees: Ceremony and Reception at Berkeley Law on Thursday, May 11, 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Professor Laurel E. Fletcher and Professor Katerina Linos, Faculty Co-Directors of Berkeley Law’s Miller Institute, are very pleased to announce the graduating J.D. and LL.M. students who have earned the 2023 Certificate of Specialization in International Law. The Berkeley Law community is cordially invited to the special in-person ceremony and reception honoring the awardees on Thursday, May 11, 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Each year, The Honorable G. William and Ariadna Miller Institute for Global Challenges and the Law recognizes students who have contributed to international law scholarship and practice at Berkeley Law by completing the requirements for the International Law Certificate. In order to earn the Certificate, students must take the foundational International Law course, complete an additional nine units of international or comparative law classes, and write a substantive original research thesis on a topic in the field.

Please join Professors Fletcher and Linos along with the International and Comparative Law Faculty and Dean Chemerinsky in celebrating the inspiring accomplishment of these outstanding students!

The 2023 ceremony takes place from 2:00–3:00 p.m. in Room 132, Berkeley Law. An outdoor champagne and cider reception with light refreshments will follow from 3:00–4:00 p.m. on Steinhart Courtyard. We warmly invite Berkeley Law students, faculty, staff, alumni and the wider international law community to come and honor the awardees.

CRG’s Political Conflict, Gender and People’s Rights Initiative presents:
Political Conflict and Accountability in South Asia 
with Saman Zia-Zarifi (Executive Director, Physicians for Human Rights; and Former Secretary General, International Commission of Jurists) and Christine Chung (Human Rights Expert). 

The panel explores the heightening of political conflict and the use of law by nationalist and far-right cultures and movements in South Asia today in areas where state and vigilante actions pose majoritarian groups as authentic and those non-dominant as “Others” as “anti-nationals”, “insurrectionists” and “outsiders”. The panel examines the weaponization of religion and racialization of difference and the use of political violence–sanctioned through deep impunity and exclusionary changes to the law, and repressive government—and explores the need for accountability to political conflict in South Asia. 

Saman Zia-Zarifi and Christine Chung will be joined in conversation with Angana P. Chatterji (Research Anthropologist and Co-chair of Political Conflict, Gender and People’s Rights Initiative, Center for Race & Gender), Laurel E. Fletcher (Chancellor’s Clinical Professor of Law, and Co-Director of the International Human Rights Law Clinic. Berkeley Law), and Leti Volpp (Robert D. and Leslie Kay Raven Professor of Law in Access to Justice at Berkeley Law, and Director of the Center for Race & Gender)

The Berkeley Journal of International Law invites you to a hybrid lunch talk on April 13 from 12:50-2:00pm in Room 130, Berkeley Law. Panel speakers currently work in the Hague as defence counsels at the International Criminal Court and at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers. This event will introduce the challenges of the defence teams before international courts and tribunals and will create awareness about the inequality of arms occurring at these courts and tribunals. The speakers have many years of experience of working in international criminal courts and tribunals.

Human Rights and the Environment: A Conversation with Daniel Magraw

The Miller Institute is pleased to host a special Q&A lunch talk on the theme, “International Law and Economic Development,” featuring Prof. Kevin Davis, Beller Family Professor of Business Law at New York University School of Law, on Monday, February 27, 12:50-1:50pm in Law 295/Warren Room, Berkeley Law. Professor Davis’ research and teaching focus on the relationship between law and economic development, with particular emphasis on anti-corruption law, commercial law, and measurement of the performance of legal systems. His publications include over 50 articles or essays, four edited volumes, and a monograph, Between Impunity and Imperialism: The Regulation of Transnational Bribery (Oxford, 2019). Prof. Davis joined the NYU law faculty in 2004 and served as Vice Dean for Global Affairs 2012–2017. He holds a B.A. from McGill University, a LL.B. from the University of Toronto, and a LL.M. from Columbia University. Prof. Davis will discuss his work, life, and career path at this informal Q&A moderated by Tragen Professor of International Law and Miller Institute Faculty Co-Director,  Dr. Katerina Linos.
