The Miller Institute for Global Challenges and the Law and the International Committee of the Red Cross organized a free, multi-day workshop on international humanitarian law (IHL) for students attending US law schools.  This workshop, held at Boalt Hall School of Law, combined lectures and hands-on exercises, which were led by legal professionals from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the American Red Cross, lawyers for the U.S. Armed Forces, law professors who specialize in IHL, as well as a representative from the State Department’s Office of Global Criminal Justice.

Topics included:
• Introduction to International Humanitarian Law
• When Does IHL Apply?
• Human Rights and IHL
• Protected Persons
• Internment/Detention
• Armed Conflicts of a Non-International Character
• The IHL/Terrorism Interface
• Implementation and Enforcement of IHL

Nineteen US law schools were represented, including:  Berkeley Law, UCLA, UC Davis, Brigham Young University, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Boston University, University of Virginia, Georgetown University, and Tufts University.
