Tools for RJA and Resentencing

Successfully litigating an RJA claim requires specific evidence of bias that can be difficult to uncover manually. The following tools are designed to meet this challenge by analyzing discovery for racialized language and identifying systemic disparities in criminal justice data.

Redo.io

Redo.io is an artificial intelligence-powered legal data and analytics platform that provides an open, free, and searchable database of individual-level prison sentences. Public defenders and district attorneys utilize Redo.io’s AI/ML models to identify those individuals serving excessive sentences for non-serious offenses for second look case reviews. This platform also includes tools for exploratory data queries, cohort identification, and preliminary analyses to correct systemic injustices within the criminal justice system.

Implementation:
The Office of the State Public Defender (OSPD): In partnership with Redo.io, OSPD has identified and sent letters advocating for resentencing to public defenders’ offices across California. Attorneys used Redo.io’s custom AL/ML models to assign “suitability scores” based on comparative analysis with their database of 95,000 prison sentences, prioritizing individuals eligible for resentencing under the state’s Second Look review process. By automating these processes, Redo.oi has enabled more efficient, direct action on unjust sentencing.
