
Dr. Maull is a scholar of race and racism in the criminal justice system, with a particular focus on how dynamics of historical racism, institutional racism, and unconscious bias reproduce racially unequal outcomes even in systems committed to change. He received is PhD in anthropology from Stanford university in 2021, where he conducted an ethnographic study of race and family dynamics in a county jail system. Since then, he has been teaching about race and racism, conducting both qualitative and quantitative studies into race in policing and prosecution, and acting as an expert witness on California Racial Justice Act motions. Outside of work you’ll find him playing with his daughter, reading sci-fi, or at a community garden.
