September 20, 2014: Prof. Kristin Luker (Faculty Director) and Adams presented “Trends, TRAPs, Trials, and Triumphs in the 2010s” to a record Number of registrants at Berkeley Law’s Alumni Weekend.
September 17, 2014: Jill E. Adams (Executive Director) and fellow Berkeley Law alumnae met with members of Congress to educate them about the Hyde Amendment and its impact on poor and low-income women and families.
September 8, 2014: Prof. Melissa Murray (Affiliated Faculty) and other experts on “The Roberts Court and Women” panel engaged a crowded room of students, faculty, and community members about several recent Supreme Court decisions and their repercussions for women.
July 2014: CRRJ wins Bright Spot Award in Reproductive Rights and Justice. CRRJ was one of three organizations selected by the Quixote Foundation to receive an unsolicited “thank you” grant this year. The Quixote Foundation recognizes organizations “who support lifelong access to compassionate reproductive health care that respects autonomy, safeguards physical and mental well-being, and supports informed decisions.” For more information on the award, click here.
May 2014: Kathleen Messinger, student researcher at CRRJ and goalkeeper for Cal women’s soccer team, wins an Oscar Geballe Postgraduate Scholarship. Inspired by her experiences at CRRJ, she plans to use the scholarship to attend law school and pursue a career in reproductive rights advocacy. Read more about her journey here.
April 2014: Editors Zakiya Luna, Khiara Bridges, and Rickie Solinger announce new Reproductive Justice Book Series from University of California Press, which will publish works exploring the contours and content of reproductive justice. The series will include primers aimed at students or people new to reproductive justice and books of original research. Authors are invited to submit proposals that will engage activists, academics, and others. The first primer will be, What is Reproductive Justice? by Rickie Solinger and Loretta Ross.
March 2014: Jill E. Adams testifies before the California Senate Health and Human Services Committee at hearing on Senate Bill 899 (Mitchell) Repeal the Maximum Family Grant Rule.
February 2014: Elaine Mui receives a UC Berkeley Spot Award for her contributions to the Civil Rights Research Roundtable on Education. The Roundtables regularly convened national civil rights leaders and their senior education staff together with researchers and policy analysts working on the most pressing issues in education reform.
February 2014: Kristin Luker, Elizabeth Josselyn Boalt Professor of Law and Professor of Sociology, and Faculty Director, Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice, has won the Wilbur Cross Medal from Yale University. The Cross Medal recognizes distinguished achievement in scholarship, teaching, academic administration, and public service, and has been awarded to a small number of outstanding Yale alumni.
February 6, 2014: Melissa Murray receives Berkeley Law’s 2014 Rutter Award for Teaching Distinction. The Rutter Award was established at the law school in 1995 by William Rutter, and honors a law professor who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to teaching. William Rutter was a philanthropist, lawyer, educator, and author who was a member of the legal profession for more than 50 years. He believed it was important to invest in teaching. He created the Rutter fund to support and celebrate high quality teaching given the importance to the legal profession. The selection of the Rutter Award recipients is based on student evaluations.
February 2014: Local Minister, Darcy Baxter, Chosen to Lead Reproductive Justice Working Group. CRRJ has appointed Reverend Darcy Baxter to lead its Reproductive Justice Working Group. Baxter is Director of Family Ministry at Starr King Unitarian Universalist Church in Hayward and sits on the national Unitarian Universalist Reproductive Justice Advisory Council. She participated in the working group throughout the 2012-13 academic year and will take the helm as facilitator for the spring 2014 term. To view press release, click here.
