The Center for Indigenous Law & Justice at Berkeley Law (CILJ) is a newly established center dedicated to improving understanding about the role of Native Nations’ sovereignty within the American legal system, fostering greater appreciation for tribal sovereignty and rights to self-determination, and standing in solidarity with Native Nations in their pursuit of justice.

CILJ envisions a future where Native Nations are fully empowered to exercise their sovereignty, where the role of Native Nation sovereignty is universally understood and respected, and where justice and self-determination are upheld for all Indigenous communities.

Our commitment to collaborative engagement—with tribal governments, legal practitioners, scholars, students, and the broader public—will ensure that CILJ’s work remains grounded, responsive, and transformative.

CILJ was initially established in January 2024 and re-launched in January 2025 under new leadership.
