Mary S. Hoopes joins BJI as the Director of Research after completing a 2017-2018 United States Supreme Court Fellowship at the Federal Judicial Center. Prior to the fellowship, she clerked for the Honorable John T. Noonan of the Ninth Circuit, and was a litigation associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP. Hoopes graduated magna cum laude from Cornell Law School, where she was an editor of the Cornell Law Review. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame. In addition to her work at BJI, Hoopes teaches a freshman seminar at Berkeley focusing on asylum and refugee law. She is a doctoral candidate in Jurisprudence and Social Policy at Berkeley, and is completing a dissertation focused on immigration and citizenship law.
