Manavinder Bains serves as Chief Counsel for Technology for NYSE Euronext, which is comprised of leading equities and derivatives exchanges across the United States and Europe.  Manavinder manages a wide array of intellectual property and technology driven matters pertaining to the clearing and settlement of cash equities, futures, options, fixed-income and exchange-traded products as well as regulatory and commercial matters pertaining to global exchange driven solutions.  Manavinder also supports strategic initiatives respecting the cultivation, acquisition and leveraging of intellectual property assets.

John Funk is both a Principal and the Chief Product Scout for Evergreen Innovation Partners. John has been involved with new product development, innovation, licensing and entrepreneurship for over 15 years. John raised almost $50m in venture capital across 5 companies he’s launched over the past 15 years, 3 of which had successful exits via IPO or M&A transactions (over $500m in value creation for shareholders) and 2 of which are still “cooking”. In prior lives he has worked for Bell Atlantic and the law firm of Skadden Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. John has been a guest lecturer on marketing and open innovation at Harvard, University of Chicago and Kellogg. John received his MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, graduated cum laude from Northwestern School of Law (concentration in IP law), and received his Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University. John tries to read over 100 books a year, blog at least a twice a month, curse individual inventors less than once a week, and keep up with his family on the ski slopes, tennis court and golf course.

Andy Gilicinski is an Innovation leader with current focus on creating new open innovation capabilities to accelerate growth. 22 year career in chemicals and consumer packaged goods industries includes two successful $30MM+ (year 1 sales) launches, R&D management (including global teams), building technology platforms and developing cross-functional innovation processes.

Nicholas Mack is General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Sungevity, a residential PV solar system company headquartered in Oakland, California.  Prior to joining Sungevity, Nick was General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for REC Solar, as well as its corporate affiliates, Mainstream Energy and AEE Solar.  Before joining REC, AEE and Mainstream in June 2008, Nick was Deputy General Counsel at Yodlee, a software and services company that provides online data and transactions products to US and international financial institutions.  Prior to Yodlee, Nick spent five years as Senior Counsel and Assistant General Counsel in the Products Law Group at Sun Microsystems.  Nick focused on IP and technology litigation during the first six years of his career as an attorney, primarily in the Silicon Valley offices of Coudert Brothers and Heller Ehrman.  Nick is a member of the State Bar of California and the Association of Corporate Counsel.  Nick received his J.D. degree from University of California, Hastings College of Law and a B.A. with Honors in American Government from Georgetown University.

John Murphy

Karna Nisewaner is a patent counsel at Intuit.  She provides intellectual property law advice and counsel to developers and management, in particular focusing on the Small Business Group.  She initiated a revised open source and third party code tracking program, along with training roll out for the company.  She is also active in supporting M&A, from IP and technical due diligence, to creating process around integration. 

Leo Novakoski is a senior attorney in Microsoft’s Intellectual Property &Licensing Group.  He has been at Microsoft since March 2003, where his practice focuses on IP transactions related to Microsoft’s patent portfolio.  Prior to joining Microsoft, Mr. Novakoski was an attorney at Intel Corporationfor 7 years, where he was responsible for managing the microprocessor patent portfolio, including handling conflicts and supporting licensing and litigation matters related to that portfolio.  Prior to Intel, Mr. Novakoski was an associate attorney at Fenwick and West for 5 years, where he prosecuted patents and advised clients on patent-related matters.  Mr. Novakoski received his law degree from Georgetown University.  He also holds a B.S. in Physics from Tufts University and a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Harvard University.  He is licensed to practice law in the state California and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Shaila Ruparel is the Associate General Counsel at Finisar Corporation.  She has been with Finisar for nearly five years and has provided counsel on a wide variety of general business, commercial contracts, employment matters, litigation, intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions and corporate compliance and governance issues.  Prior to her in-house experience, Ms. Ruparel was an associate at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison and at Jones Day.  Ms. Ruparel received her B.A. from University of California, Berkeley with highest honors and obtained her J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School.  Ms. Ruparel is a member of the State Bar of California.”

Paul Saraceni joined RPX as Chief Intellectual Property Officer in September 2008, bringing more than 15 years of intellectual property law experience, from both the private practice and in-house counsel perspectives. Immediately prior to joining RPX, Mr. Saraceni was Vice President and Associate General Counsel, IP Strategy & Transactions, at Yahoo! Inc., where he developed and managed Yahoo!’s patent acquisition program, led and negotiated strategic IP deals, patent licensing transactions, and IP aspects of M&A deals and business and technology transactions.
            
Gary Spiegel, Oracle

Andrew Torrance joined the KU Law faculty in 2005 and, in 2009, was named a Docking Faculty Scholar, a university-wide program established with a gift from the late Mrs. Meredith Docking to honor faculty members who have distinguished themselves in their early careers. He was also a 2009-10 Fellow in Law, Innovation and Growth at the Searle Center at Northwestern University Law School. In August of 2010, Torrance was invited by Google Inc., to give a Google TechTalk at Google’s main Mountain View campus in California;  Google posted his entire presentation, “The Patent Game: Experiments in the Cathedral of Law,” on its YouTube Google TechTalk channel. He received his Ph.D. in biology from Harvard University in 1997 and is a 2000 graduate of Harvard Law School. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Queen’s University in Canada. In 2003, he was named the Hrdy Visiting Professor of Conservation Biology at Harvard University and taught Biodiversity: Science, Policy, and Law at Harvard University from 1999 until his arrival at KU.

John Mark Walker

Mallun Yen is Sr. Managing Director, Worldwide Intellectual Property at Cisco Systems, Inc. located in San Jose, CA. As Cisco’s Chief IP Counsel, Mallun leads a team that is responsible for patents, trademarks and copyrights, including prosecution, licensing and litigation as well as standards, acquisitions and IP aspects of M&A transactions. After earning a law degree from Boalt Hall, Mallun clerked for The Honorable Ronald M. Whyte for the U.S. District Court in San Jose and then joined Weil, Gotshal & Manges, where her practice focused on patent litigation and technology transactions. Prior to joining Cisco in 2002, Mallun served as Chief Counsel of Calient Networks located in San Jose.
