The Life Sciences Law & Policy Center at Berkeley Law works on the legal questions that determine how discoveries in medicine, data, and biotechnology reach the public. Its work spans health law, bioethics, biotechnology and pharmaceutical intellectual property, FDA regulation and reform, health data privacy, and the use of artificial intelligence across life sciences research and development. The Center is part of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, alongside the IP & Competition Law Center.

The Center publishes original commentary on the Berkeley Life Sciences Forum and supports a host of faculty and student research. It runs a full schedule of academic and industry events, recordings of which are on our event video playlist and in Berkeley Law’s CLE library, B-CLE.

Berkeley Law’s intellectual property program is ranked first in the country by U.S. News, and the Center sits inside UC Berkeley’s life sciences ecosystem of research labs, biotech startups, and the investors and law firms that serve them. Students take health law, FDA law, and biotechnology law, study bioethics and emerging technologies, and work alongside Ph.D. students on case studies of breakthrough inventions. The Center also draws on faculty examining how life sciences innovation lands in society, including the work in our Center for Technology, Justice & the Courts.
