Since its launch in 2018, the Berkeley-Tsinghua Conference has served as a platform for scholars, judges, practitioners, policymakers, and industry leaders from China, the United States, and beyond to exchange views on some of the most important developments in intellectual property law. Over the past eight years, the global innovation landscape has undergone profound transformation. AI has emerged as a general-purpose technology reshaping both creative and inventive processes. Chinese companies have become increasingly active participants in global innovation ecosystems. At the same time, geopolitical tensions, regulatory fragmentation, and new forms of technological competition have created fresh challenges for intellectual property systems around the world. This year, the conference will explore both the doctrinal challenges posed by advanced AI technologies and the practical realities facing innovative companies operating across jurisdictions. Topics will include AI training and copyright law, AI’s impact on patent doctrine, platform liability, pharmaceutical innovation, standard-essential patents, trade secrets, licensing, and the evolving landscape of transnational intellectual property practice.
