BACKGROUND
Prize winner Christopher Daley ’01 is a public interest attorney and Boalt graduate who founded California’s first direct services practice for transgender legal issues—the Transgender Law Center. Rather than focusing on changing laws or creating new laws to protect its clients, the Center has used and tested existing laws that haven’t yet been applied to transgendered people, but could prove beneficial. “There is an incredible vacuum of legal knowledge among attorneys who want to serve the transgendered community,” Daley says. “Our aim is to create a legal response to everyday problems faced by transgendered people—housing, employment, medical care, safety—by transforming how the law understands and operates around issues of gender.” Chris Daley’s cutting-edge work has brought social justice to a profoundly underserved community.
The Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice (HCSJ) gala honors past trailblazers in civil rights law and rewards the legal pioneers of today. The intellectual hub of the law school’s vibrant social justice community, HCSJ is a training and research center that prepares the next generation of public interest lawyers to meet the legal challenges facing disadvantaged communities.
