WHAT: The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law will host a special session of the Supreme Court of California as part of the court’s effort to improve public understanding of its role and function. The court will hear oral arguments in the law school’s Booth Auditorium, sitting outside of its usual chambers to educate and interact with the local community, students, and faculty.
WHERE: Berkeley Law, Booth Auditorium, 2778 Bancroft Way.
WHO: Law students, university faculty and staff, and high school students from Balboa High School (San Francisco), De Anza High School (Richmond), Terra Linda High School (San Rafael), and Tamalpais High School (Mill Valley) are expected to attend. The morning program will include introductory remarks, student questions and answers by the justices, followed by oral argument.
WHEN: Wed., Oct. 9, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
CASES: The first case to be argued is Sander (Richard) et al. v. State Bar of California et al. (Case No. S194951). Issue: whether records in the State Bar’s information database are subject to public disclosure. The afternoon session begins at 1:00 p.m. and will include oral argument in Jerry Beeman and Pharmacy Services, Inc. et al. v. Anthem Prescription Management, LLC et al. (Case No. S203124). Issue: free speech clause of the California Constitution. The second case will be People v. Contreras (George Lopez) (Case No. S058019). Issue: death penalty appeal.

The special session will be broadcast live and live-streamed on the Web by The California Channel (see satellite details below). No electronic devices (cameras, phones, audio recorders, etc.) are allowed in the courtroom during oral arguments—a live stream will be available in an adjacent media/overflow room. Pool arrangements (video and photography) have been authorized by Supreme Court order under California Rules of Court Rule 1.150:

BACKGROUND: The Berkeley Law event is the state Supreme Court’s most recent special session, following similar events in Santa Ana, Fresno, San Jose, San Diego, Redding, Santa Barbara, Santa Rosa, Riverside, Berkeley (now second occasion), Fresno (second occasion), UC Davis, and University of San Francisco. The programs reflect the court’s commitment to ensuring the public an opportunity to experience its work first hand, and, in particular, giving students an opportunity to participate in, and learn from, the judicial process. In addition to the courtroom proceedings, the Supreme Court will attend a post-argument reception with law school faculty and students.
