What: Raven Lecture about Shareholder Power-Corporate Responsibility by Phil Angelides, CalPERS Trustee State Treasurer.

The Center for Social Justice is sponsoring a Working Conference on the Corporation in Social Context: Planning for the Future on March 14-15, 2003 at the University of California at Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). The Conference will bring together a group of business leaders, corporate lawyers, academics, and thoughtful corporate critics to develop an agenda for improving the social responsibility of corporations. The Center for Social Justice at Boalt Hall has convened a series of conversations with academics and practitioners leading to the March conference. Thoughtful long-range reform approaches that are realistic over a twenty year time span will be discussed.
Our keynote speaker will be Phil Angelides, Treasurer of the State of California, whose leadership on the CALPERS Board has given him deep insight into questions of corporate governance and responsibility. He will deliver the annual Raven Lecture at Boalt Hall on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. A reception will follow.

On Saturday, an invitation-only working conference will assess the diverse strategies, internal and external, used both by shareholders and allies in civil society to affect the decisions made by corporate management and to encourage corporations to be more socially responsible. The expansion of the fiduciary duties of corporations and the composition of boards of directors to include more stakeholders, changing the responsibilities of lawyers, and expanding the regulation of American corporations which do business in other countries will also be discussed. Confirmed participants include Mr. Phil Angelides, State Treasurer and Board Member, CalPERS; Mr. Carl Pope, Executive Director, Sierra Club; Mr. Bob Dunn, CEO, Business for Social Responsibility; Mr. Michael Traynor, Attorney-at-Law, Cooley & Godward; Professor Richard Buxbaum, Boalt Law School; Judith Chomsky, Attorney-at-Law; and Professor Charles Sabel, Columbia University School of Law.
