What: A lecture by Pascal Lamy, Director-General, World Trade Organization (WTO), on “The Case for Trade: Why the Multilateral Trading System is More Important than Ever for the U.S.” Lamy will address the dire consequences that might ensue should the U.S. adopt protectionist policies due to the global financial crisis. He will discuss the U.S. candidates’ positions on protectionism and on the “Doha Development Round,” international trade talks designed to lower trade barriers. Lamy will make the case for rules-based, globally-regulated trade; he will also examine the impact of trade on climate change.
The event is being sponsored by UC Berkeley School of Law’s Miller Institute for Global Challenges and the Law.

Mr. Lamy has served as the Director-General of the WTO since 2005. Previously the Trade Commissioner of the European Union in Brussels, Mr. Lamy has also served as Chief of Cabinet to the President of the European Commission; as political advisor to the Economics and Finance Minister and the Prime Minister of France; and as President of Notre Europe, a think tank working on European integration.
