Before coming to Boalt in 1977, Charles McClain worked on the legal staff of the American Association of University Professors.
McClain is the recipient of the Annual Essay Award of the Historical Society of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. In 1988, he received a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship. He has been a visiting professor at Santa Clara University Law School and has taught in the University of Nevada at Reno's Master of Judicial Studies Program.
McClain is the author of In Search of Equality: The Chinese Struggle Against Discrimination in Nineteenth-Century America and editor of the four-volume anthology Asian Americans and the Law: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives. He is also the author of a recent work on the history of the modern California Supreme Court.
In 2003 McClain received the Distinguished Research Mentoring Award, which is presented annually by the UC Berkeley College of Letters and Science.
