This course will cover the use of generative AI (GenAI) in legal practice. Topics include the current AI landscape; fluency in GenAI’s core concepts and foundational terminology; prompt engineering; and responsible integration of GenAI into legal research, drafting, client communications, and other workflows. We will address ethics and access to justice, including professional-responsibility issues (such as confidentiality and duty of competence) and risks such as hallucination, with practical mitigation methods. The course is interactive and problem-focused, with exercises and short quizzes.

Kristie Chamorro joined Berkeley Law in 2020 as the Instructional & Educational Technology Librarian. Her work includes evaluating and integrating new technologies into legal research and teaching, with an emphasis on preparing students for legal practice. Kristie monitors the AI landscape and curates resources to help law students, faculty, and legal professionals navigate this rapidly evolving field. She has taught and presented extensively on AI and legal practice to the Berkeley Law community, as well as to state, national, and international audiences. Before joining Berkeley Law, Kristie worked as a litigation associate at Folger Levin & Khan and later as a Senior Staff Attorney at the California Court of Appeal.
