This course begins with an introduction to mindfulness to understand how the (legal) mind works and how to reduce stress, increase wellbeing, and cultivate wise, compassionate states of mind. It then invites you to investigate how to be thoughtful in the ways you think, work, and communicate in law school and in the legal profession. Integral to this investigation is an exploration of and engagement with core lawyering skills and values helpful in finding happiness in the law and in contributing to a more just, equitable profession and society. At the conclusion of the class, you’ll create a vision for your most successful, joyful, and values-based life in the law. There will be a day-long, off-campus retreat on SUNDAY, MARCH 1ST. Attendance is required at the retreat.

Attendance at the first class is mandatory for all currently enrolled and waitlisted students; any currently enrolled or waitlisted students who are not present on the first day of class (without prior permission of the instructor) will be dropped. The instructor will continue to take attendance throughout the add/drop period and anyone who moves off the waitlist into the class must continue to attend or have prior permission of the instructor in order not to be dropped.
