Annotation

This report by the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health offers an analysis of and steps to advance the reproductive health and rights of Latinas in the United States. Published in February of 2005, it provides an overview of the status of Latina reproductive health and a seven-point policy action program to guide the efforts of federal, state and local policymakers. Highlighting that Latinas face poorer health outcomes than others, the report calls for federal funding, health care access and comprehensive sexuality education in addition to linguistic and culturally competent support from health care personnel. The institute supports their argument for better access to healthcare, funding and policy revision by using statistical reports from the Commonwealth Fund, US Census Bureau, National Institutes of Health and US Department of Health and Human Services. This report will be helpful for advocates and service providers who work with Latina women and youth, who tend to be Spanish speakers who lack the resources, money and education to receive reproductive health and support. The last section of the report is geared toward State and Federal policymakers who create laws and policies affecting the lives of Latina women, their families and communities. It is rich with data that demonstrate the health disparities that Latinas faced in the U.S. The report is helpful and informative because it highlights the need for policy revision in health care reform that incorporates the realities in Latina’s lives.
