Anisha Gupta ’14 returned to U.C. Berkeley School of Law in 2026 as a Clinical Supervising Attorney in the Death Penalty Clinic. She is a capital and criminal defense attorney who has primarily represented indigent clients at the trial level in state and federal court.
A passionate advocate for those whom the State seeks to incarcerate or kill, Gupta spent the preceding seven years as a civilian capital defense attorney in the Military Commissions Defense Organization where she represented Walid bin ‘Atash in United States v. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, et al.—the Guantánamo Bay death penalty trial of the five men accused of planning the attacks of 9/11. She began her career at The Bronx Defenders, where she served for five years as a public defender representing thousands of individuals charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses in the South Bronx.
Gupta earned her J.D. from UC Berkeley School of Law. She graduated magna cum laude from Wellesley College with a B.A. in English and Peace and Justice Studies.
