Alan Seem has practiced law for nearly 30 years in multiple jurisdictions around the world. He started his practice with Shearman & Sterling (now A&O Shearman) in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Abu Dhabi, and served as the Managing Partner of the Beijing Office and Head of Asia Capital Markets, before relocating to Silicon Valley in 2012. He spent several years each with Jones Day and DLA Piper in Palo Alto, before co-founding corporate law-focused Ekberg, Fagre & Seem LLP in 2025.
After starting his career primarily as a capital markets lawyer in Asia, working on IPOs of Chinese and other Asian companies in the U.S. and Hong Kong stock markets, Mr. Seem expanded his practice to also cover M&A transactions, venture capital and corporate governance advisory work. He works with companies large and small, public and private, across industries, with a focus on technology and emerging growth companies.
Alan has helped companies raise, receive and invest billions of dollars in a variety of public and private financings, including IPOs, follow-on offerings, debt and convertible debt issuances, venture capital financings, mergers, acquisitions and take-private transactions. He has represented issuers, underwriters, buyers, sellers, investors and financial advisors.
He has a B.A. degree (magna cum laude) from Dartmouth College in Asian Studies and Economics and a J.D. from Columbia Law School. He is admitted to practice in New York and California. Mr. Seem also teaches as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of California Berkeley Law School and is a Trustee of the California Pacific Medical Center Foundation.
