Before uploading any image to the WordPress media library to insert on a web page, please resize and optimize the image as appropriate. When properly optimized, the file size for any image on our website should not ever need to exceed about 500K, even when it is a large image or a full-width banner. Ideally, most images should end up under 100K.
There are a number of easy-to-use, free online tools available for optimizing and resizing images for the web.
Imageresizer.com lets you both resize and optimize at the same time. Here’s a one-minute screen recording that demonstrates how it works.
Some other tools:
Jpeg.io
Image Optimizer
Adobe Express (with preset proportions – not always recommended)
For the Berkeley Law website, keep in mind the following dimensions:
Full-width banner image on a normal page: 860px
Full-width banner image for a “Full-Width Template” page: 1160px
Basic inset image size: Not wider than 500px
If you use Photoshop would like to resize and optimize images with more accuracy, the following video is recommended for basic instructions on using Photoshop to optimize images. If you do not have Photoshop, you can download it here or contact the Berkeley Law help desk for assistance.
- Rather than using his keyboard shortcut, you can also pull up the Save for Web dialogue box by going to: File >> Export >> Save for Web (Legacy).
- The full width of one of our normal web pages (i.e., for a banner) is 860 pixels. So when resizing the image (as shown in the tutorial), put in 860 px wide (and retain proportions).
- The width of our “Full-Width Template” (no sidebar menu) is 1160 px.
- If it is a smaller image such a headshot, or a photo embedded in an article, the size should probably be between about 200 and 400 px, depending on the situation.
