Juan Battle, Professor
Sociology, Public Health, & Urban Education at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York

Juan Battle is a Professor of Sociology, Public Health, & Urban Education at theGraduate Center of the City University of New York (C.U.N.Y.).

With over 50 grants and publications – including articles, encyclopedia entries, bookchapters, and books – his research focuses on race, sexuality, and social justice.

Most recently, he was a Fulbright Senior Specialist and was the Fulbright DistinguishedChair of Gender Studies at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria. Further, he is a recentpresident of the Association of Black Sociologists and is actively involved with theAmerican Sociological Association (ASA).

Professor Battle’s scholarship has included work throughout North America, as well ason South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Among his projects, currently he is headingthe Social Justice Sexuality initiative – a project exploring the lived experiences of Black,Latina/o, and Asian lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in the United Statesand Puerto Rico.

He received his A.S. and B.S. from York College of Pennsylvania. His M.A. and PhD wereboth received from the University of Michigan.
