You will need to sign up with an ISP in order to connect to the internet from home.
Modem (56K)
UC Berkeley provides modem dial-up connections for faculty, staff, and students.
- Home-IP: low-cost dial-up services with 2-hour session limits and a $20/year fee. These services are often busy during peak hours.
- Subscription Home IP Service (SHIPS): a no-busy-signal service with sessions lasting up to 8 hours. This service costs $12/month.
Broadband
For those who require faster speeds than what a modem dial-up allows, broadband provides speeds many times that of a 56K modem. In addition, broadband lines are continuously connected as opposed to requiring a dial-up. However, they are more expensive than dial-up ISPs. Cable modems provide access via cable TV lines, whereas DSL provides access via ordinary telephone lines (without tying up the line).
- Comcast (cable)
- AT&T DSL
- DSL Extreme
