Hiring: Water Law & Policy Research Fellow for the Wheeler Water Institute

Salary Range: $61,848 – $64,920
Start Date: Anticipated September 19, 2016

This is a 100% time, one-year term contract position, with the possibility of renewal for a second year contingent on funding.

Overview:

The Wheeler Water Institute is seeking to hire a Research Fellow.

The Wheeler Water Institute is a research and policy institute within the Center for Law, Energy and the Environment (CLEE) at the UC Berkeley School of Law. Building on UC Berkeley’s history of and commitment to research and public service and leading environmental law program, CLEE leverages the intellectual resources of Berkeley Law faculty and students in furtherance of applied scholarship in a variety of environmental and energy law and policy areas. CLEE’s research priorities include combatting climate change, advancing sustainable energy, addressing water allocation and management challenges, and developing solutions to other pressing environmental law and policy challenges.

The fellow will work with the Wheeler Institute on water resources issues. Specific research areas will depend on the fellow’s background and interests, but will likely include: sustainable groundwater management; water allocation during drought; innovation in the water sector; water data; water security and sustainability institutions; and/or other water management and policy issues. An overarching emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration, including engagement with scientists and engineers, will be central to these projects. The fellow may also work on other water and/or other related initiatives within Wheeler and CLEE more generally, depending on program needs throughout the duration of the fellowship. The fellow must be willing to travel occasionally within California.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Fellow’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Working with Berkeley Law faculty and staff, and with collaborators at other

    institutions, to conduct research on water resources, with a focus on California issues;

  • Researching and writing white papers and articles of publishable quality for policy-

    focused audiences, under the direction of faculty and staff;

  • Interdisciplinary collaboration on complex issues at the intersection of emerging science

    and policy;

  • Assisting Center staff in organizing and running workshops or other events with

    California water leaders, policymakers, stakeholders, academics, and other audiences;

  • Speaking at workshops or other events to practitioners, the academic community, the

    media, and others about research initiatives; and

  • Assisting with other aspects of workshop, research, and report production as assigned; and

  • Assisting with other miscellaneous program and Center tasks. Minimum Qualifications Required (at time of application):

 Candidate must hold a JD degree or equivalent degree, or a PhD degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ‒  At least 3 years of experience in a law- or policy-focused environment

  • ‒  Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills;

  • ‒  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to

    communicate clearly, listen actively, interact with a variety of audiences, and share

    knowledge and information effectively;

  • ‒  Excellent organizational skills;

  • ‒  Self-starter able to prioritize and function both independently and collaboratively;

  • ‒  Demonstrated ability to finish projects and deliver on commitments;

  • ‒  Willingness to plunge into unfamiliar disciplines;

  • ‒  Willingness to take risks by exploring and testing new ideas;

  • ‒  Background in water law, environmental law, hydrology or other water-related

    science, economics and/or finance are desirable;

  • ‒  Experience and knowledge at the intersection of law, science, and policy and the ability

    to work with people from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and policy perspectives;

    and

  • ‒  A passion for making the world better.
