Juvenile Hall Outreach (JHO) members work in teams to teach a six-week street law curriculum to a unit of incarcerated youth at the Juvenile Hall. The class teaches basic rights, skills for interacting with law enforcement, and forward looking lessons to help students plan for their futures. This is an incredible opportunity for students interested in criminal justice, working with youth, and any former teachers.
Time Commitment: 30 hours/semester. About 6-10 hours before teaching starts (training and getting approved to visit the Hall) and 3.5-6 hours a week for 6 weeks once teaching starts. Teaching sessions last for 1 ½ hours and it takes about 30 minutes to get to and from the Hall. In addition, students must spend some time with their teaching groups prepping their lesson plans and working to figure out answers to student questions.
