Here are some of their stories:
Griselda Cabrera, 18′
Criminal Field Placement
U.S. Attorney’s Office, NDCA
“Serving as a law clerk for the U.S. Attorney’s Office has been one of two great experiences I have had in law school, the first one being serving as a judicial extern last Spring. Through both experiences, I have learned more about the type of lawyer I want to be and developed my lawyering skills in a way that I have not been able to inside the classroom. The Field Placement Program at Berkeley Law has definitely offered opportunities that I would not have imagined taking part in when coming to law school.”
Paris DeYoung, 19'
U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California
“I learned an immense amount at my field placement. What immediately comes to mind is how much stronger my research and writing skills are now than they were before my placement began. I also learned a significant amount about litigation and litigation procedures, and I had the opportunity to learn about negotiations and settlement procedures which was both immensely helpful and interesting . . . Field placements are immensely important and I am grateful that Berkeley has such a robust field placement program.”
John Hannon, 19'
Environmental Field Placement
California Energy Commission
“The Field Placement Program provided a wonderful, applied experience for which I am extremely grateful. This externship helped me gain practical knowledge of Administrative Law and Constitutional Law topics which I found abstract and hard to grasp in the lecture hall. . . I also found the level of supervision in the field placement program ensured that my work for the CEC never felt disconnected from my experience at Berkeley Law.”
Daniela Huerta Garcia, 19'
Away Field Placement
Supreme Court of the State of Hawaii
“I am very happy and extremely grateful that Berkeley allows us to spend an entire semester elsewhere. I talked to a couple of clerks at the supreme court about this, and it seems that Berkeley is exceptional in this way, in valuing experiential education in the same manner in which it values academics. As I have told them, Berkeley really puts its money where its mouth is and supports its students in allowing them from day 1 to truly experience what it means to be a lawyer.”
Bonnie Stender, 19'
Civil Field Placement
BART Office of the General Counsel
“My experience at BART’s General Counsel’s Office was excellent. I gained a significant amount of legal research experience, had the opportunity to network with many local government attorneys, and received valuable feedback and career advice from my supervisor and from other General Counsel attorneys . . . The Field Placement Program provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain real-world lawyering skills and experiences, and I believe it is one of Berkeley Law’s best programs.”
