Melissa Adamson is a 2L from Wilton, Connecticut. She graduated from Tufts University in 2011 with a double major in International Relations and Community Health. Prior to law school, Melissa worked with the Global Partnership Program at SeriousFun Children’s Network to assist in opening the first medical camp for children living with HIV in Botswana. In addition to competing on the Appellate Advocacy team, Melissa co-leads the Foster Education Project, a student-led program that pairs law students with foster youth as educational rights holders. She spent her 1L summer interning at the National Center for Youth Law, focusing on issues related to adolescent health and confidentiality. In her free time, she enjoys backpacking in national parks and volunteering with SeriousFun camps.

Jordan Bock is a 2L from Weston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Harvard in 2010 with a major in physics and astrophysics and a minor in government. Before coming to law school, she spent four years teaching 7th and 8th grade science in Maryland and California. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, she is a member of the Foster Education Project and the Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law. She spent her 1L summer at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco, working for the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force. Outside of law school, Jordan enjoys running and exploring San Francisco.

Kathryn (Kathy) Bowen is a 3L from Miami, Florida. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2011 with a major in Political Science and a minor in Conservation and Resource Studies.

Before coming to law school, she worked at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, Italy as a Management Consultant and Special Assistant to the Deputy Director General of Operations. In addition to her role as the director of the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Kathy is a Teaching Assistant for the Appellate Advocacy course and a Senior Editor of Ecology Law Currents. She spent her 1L summer at the U.S. Agency for International Development, Office of the General Counsel in Washington D.C., and her 2L summer in the Silicon Valley Office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP.

In her free time, Kathy enjoys practicing hot yoga and listening to NPR podcasts.

Katherine is a 2L from Nevada City, California. She graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 2011 with a major in International Political Economy and a minor in Spanish.

Prior to law school, Katherine worked at United Way of King County in Seattle, focusing on expanding access to public benefits programs (and enjoying the abundance of rain and flannel in the Northwest). She also spent a year working in Panama City, Panama, where she developed a profound love for salsa dancing and plantains. At Berkeley Law, Katherine is an Articles Editor for the Berkeley Journal of African-American Law and Policy, Treasurer for the Coalition for Diversity, and a participant in Berkeley’s Youth Defender Clinic.

Katherine spent her 1L summer at the Public Defender Service for Washington, D.C. and intends to become a public defender. Her interests outside of law include hiking, the color orange, and eating everything in sight.

Sophie Cooper is a 3L from Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from Yale College in 2009 with a major in History and has a Masters from Columbia University. Before law school, Sophie worked as an AmeriCorps employee in Alabama and then on Capitol Hill as an aide to Congresswoman Terri Sewell. In addition to her role as the director of the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Sophie is a member of the Berkeley Journal of African-American Law and Policy. She spent her 1L summer at the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California in San Francisco and her 2L summer at Skadden Arps.

Hector Emilio Corea is a 2L from Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from Wichita State University in 2010 with a double major in Philosophy and Political Science.

Hector Emilio Corea has served nearly seven years in Army Reserve. As a public affairs specialist, Sergeant Corea has published more than 20 news stories and 250 photographs online and through media outlets. In addition to his Reserve duties, he is very active in the Berkeley Law community; in the upcoming year, he will serve as Treasurer of La Raza Law Students Association, Social Chair of La Raza Law Journal, and Recruiting Manager of the East Bay Dreamers Clinic. He is also a member of the California Law Review and First Generation Professionals.

In his free time, Emilio enjoys soccer, tennis, boxing, running, and hiking.

Lily Dobson is a 3L from Ames, Iowa. In addition to her role as Director for the Appellate Branch of the Board of Advocates, Lily is a board member of the Berkeley Journal of International Law. During her second year at U.C. Berkeley, Lily worked as an extern for the Honorable Jim Humes of the California Court of Appeal and competed in the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition in Vienna, Austria. Lily spent her 1L summer working at the Iowa Attorney General’s Office and her 2L summer at Dorsey & Whitney LLP, a Minneapolis-based law firm. Lily received her B.A. in International Studies from the University of Iowa, where she participated in a Fulbright-Hayes Group Project for intensive Swahili studies in Tanzania. In her free time, Lily enjoys being active and regularly participates in a variety of fitness activities.

Guilherme is a 2L from Brasilia, Brazil. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 2012 with a major in political science. He has worked at a treatment center for survivors of torture, a legal nonprofit that represents immigrants and refugees, and a corporate law firm in the area of international capital markets. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy Team, Guilherme is the Submissions Editor of the Berkeley Journal of International Law, and the William Coblentz Civil Rights Research Fellow at the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society. He spent his 1L summer at the NY State Division of Human Rights, working in the enforcement of NY’s antidiscrimination law with regard to housing. In his free time, he enjoys playing volleyball and going to spoken-word events.

Louise Nelson Dyble is a J.D. candidate at Berkeley Law and holds a PhD in History from UC Berkeley. She has had legal externships with the Bay Area Rapid Transit District and the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research. Her areas of interest include environmental law, infrastructure policy, land use and development, and intergovernmental relations. Dyble taught courses on American history, politics, and policy as an Assistant Professor at Michigan Technological University. She also served as Associate Director of the Keston Institute for Infrastructure at the University of Southern California. Dyble won the Urban History Association award for best dissertation is author of _Paying the Toll: Local Power, Regional Politics, and the Golden Gate Bridge_ (Penn 2009) and co-author of _California Cuisine and Just Food_ (MIT 2013). Dyble has published articles in the Journal of Urban History, Technology & Culture, and the Journal of Planning History.

Reed is a 2L from Santa Cruz, California. He graduated from Brown University in 2013 with a major in public policy and economics. Reed spent his time before Boalt as a field organizer biking through the Rockies with Colorado Fair Share, and as a writing assistant at UC Santa Cruz. When he is not competing on Boalt’s appellate advocacy team, Reed is developing a police oversight project with the Policy Advocacy Clinic, and co-coordinating the Civil Rights Outreach Project. Reed spent his 1L summer exploring litigation with the East Bay Community Law Center’s Housing Practice. For fun, Reed plays Brazilian Capoeira, breakdances, bike tours, backpacks, and cooks.

Anthony is a 3L from Turlock, California. He graduated from Fresno State in 2013 with a major in Philosophy. Before coming to law school, Anthony competed in the American Collegiate Moot Court Association where he placed at the National Championships on multiple occasions. He spent his 1L summer at the Institute for Justice doing policy work, and his 2L summer at Wanger Jones Helsley specializing in general litigation and employment law.

Noah Ickowitz is a 2L at Berkeley Law, and was born and raised in Sherman Oaks, California. For his undergraduate education, Noah attended UC Berkeley, where he majored in Political Economy.

Prior to attending law school, Noah worked at an economic consulting firm called Analysis Group. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy Team, Noah is the president of the Boalt Hall Student Association, and is on the Berkeley Business Law Journal. During his 1L summer, he served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Beth Labson Freeman of the Northern District of California.

Richard Johnson is a 2L from Rancho Cucamonga, California. Richard entered the workforce at fifteen out of necessity. And as a result, he has a broad range of experience, ranging from bartender, to forklift operator, to sandpaper salesman.

Six years after leaving high school, Richard enrolled at a community college. Two years later he transferred to the University of California, San Diego. And two years after that, he graduated with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Law and Society. Richard immediately started law school and spent his 1L summer externing for Justice Cuéllar on the California Supreme Court.

In his free time, Richard enjoys watching quality television like Bachelor in Paradise.

Kate Kennedy is a 3L from Long Beach, California. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 2012 with a degree in American Studies and a minor in Public Policy.

Before coming to law school, she worked for Congressman Henry A. Waxman. In addition to her role as the Co-Chair of the Berkeley Law Board of Advocates, Kate is a Submissions Editor for the Berkeley Business Law Journal and a member of the Boalt Hall Women’s Association. She spent her 1L summer as a judicial extern for the Honorable Russell Hom and her 2L summer at O’Melveny & Myers, specializing in litigation.

In her free time, Kate enjoys the outdoors, yoga, and spending time with family and friends.

Tim Kline is a 2L from San Francisco, CA. He graduated from UC Berkeley with a major in Society and Environment and minors in both Conservation and Resource Studies and Forestry.

Before law school, Tim worked in science communication for the state and federal governments. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Tim is an Articles Editor of Ecology Law Quarterly. He spent his 1L summer at the California Dept. of Justice’s Environment and Land sections.

In his little free time, Tim swims in the San Francisco Bay, climbs, reads poetry, and tries to watercolor.

Mae Manupipatpong is a 2L from Bangkok, Thailand. She graduated from the College of Wooster in 2014 with a double major in Political Science and Philosophy.

In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Mae is the Publishing Editor of the Ecology Law Quarterly and a member of the Karuk-Berkeley Collaborative. Mae spent her 1L summer at the Center for Biological Diversity, an Oakland based non-profit organization, specializing in environmental law.

In her free time, Mae enjoys singing.

Aaron Murphy is a 2L member of the Appellate Branch, competing in the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. He is a Submissions Editor for the Berkeley Journal of International Law, a Student Leader of the International Human Rights Workshop and a research assistant for Professor David Oppenheimer. Before attending law school, he worked for the Uganda Capital Markets Authority and ran a legal rights program for an international NGO in Kampala, Uganda.

Daniele Arad-Neeman is a 2L from Seattle, Washington. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 2014 with a major in History. She spent her 1L summer at the U.S. Senate HELP Committee in Washington, D.C., where she focused on employment, labor and pensions issues. In addition to competing on Boalt’s Appellate Advocacy team, Daniele is the production editor for the Berkeley Journal of Employment and Labor Law and a student-counselor at the EBCLC’s Consumer Justice Clinic.

In her free time, Daniele enjoys traveling, reading historical fiction, and cooking for friends and family.

Zachary Nguyen is a 2L from Montclair, California. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 2012 with majors in mathematics and economics.

Before coming to law school, Zach worked at Charles River Associates as an economic consultant. In addition to competing on the Board of Advocates, Appellate Advocacy team (moot court), he is a member of the California Law Review, Teaching Assistant for the First-Year Skills Program, Co-Chair of First Generation Professionals, and Academics Chair for the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association. He spent his 1L summer at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (New York Regional Office) in the Enforcement Division and will spend his 2L summer at Fenwick & West LLP, focusing in emerging companies.

In his free time, Zach enjoys scuba diving, backpacking, and eco-volunteerism.

Lilli is a 2L from San Francisco, CA. She graduated from Reed College in Portland, OR in 2013 with a major in history. Before coming to law school, she worked at a small, Palo Alto-based law firm as a paralegal. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Lilli is the Co-Chair of the Post-Conviction Advocacy Project and a Symposium Editor for the Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law. She spent her 1L summer at the Orleans Public Defenders in New Orleans, LA. In her free time, Lilli enjoys hiking in Tilden Park and thinking about criminal justice reform.

Karina Puttieva is a 2L and hails from the great state of New Jersey. She graduated from Haverford College in 2011 with a major in English and minors in German and Gender Studies.

Before coming to law school, she worked as a paralegal at legal aid and then as a victim advocate at the Philadelphia DA’s office. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Karina is a TA for first year Legal Writing & Research, Submissions Editor for the Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law, Board Member of the Boalt Hall Women’s Association, and a mentor for First Generation Professionals. She spent her 1L summer at the United States Attorney’s Office.

In her free time, Karina enjoys reading, frisbee golf, and thrift-store hunting.

Taylor is a 2L from Liberty, South Carolina. She graduated from Clemson University in 2012 with a double major in English and History. Before coming to law school, she worked at Food Gatherers food bank in Ann Arbor, Michigan as a Development Associate. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Taylor is involved with the California Law Review and Ecology Law Quarterly. She spent her 1L summer at the District Court in San Francisco, externing for Judge Edward Chen.

In her free time, Taylor enjoys running, reading, and watching political dramas.

Monsura Sirajee is a 2L from Temecula, CA. She graduated from Boston University in 2013 with a major in History and Religion.

Before coming to law school, Monsura worked at the Federal Trade Commission as a paralegal in the Office of Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Monsura is the Outreach Chair of the Consumer Advocacy and Protection Society and the Programming Chair of the Women of Color Collective.

In her free time, Monsura enjoys spending time with family and experimenting with kitchen gadgets.

Brandon V. Stracener is a 3L from Sacramento, California. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2012 with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Anthropology.

Before coming to law school, Brandon worked in the field of Loss Prevention. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Brandon is the Senior Development Editor of the California Law Review and a Research Fellow for the California Constitution Center. He spent his 1L summer as a judicial extern to the Honorable Consuelo María Callahan of the Ninth Circuit and his 2L summer at Cooley LLP in Palo Alto focusing on Litigation, including work on Appellate Litigation projects. He is spending his fall semester as a judicial extern to the Honorable Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar of the Supreme Court of California.

In his free time, Brandon enjoys reading, exercise, bacon and cheese, and games of strategy.

My name is Sergio Torres and I am a 2L from Colombia, South America. I graduated from the university of Maryland in 2014 with a major in Finance. Previously, I studied Industrial Engineering at the National University of Colombia. I come from a family of academics. My mother was a legal practitioner for over 25 years and my father is a Engineering professor. I am very interested in law and economics. I will like to research the impact that wealth redistribution theories, specially concerning tax law and private compensation systems, have on the legal analysis of different fields of law such as contract law and antitrust.

In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, I am a member of the California Law Review. I spent my summer as a research assistant for some of my professors, an experience that I very much recommend. I truly look forward to meeting you all and working with you.

I play chess and poker occasionally and am trying to learn how to surf properly (although that is not working so well for me at the time). I like board games and sports and am up for any outdoor activity as long as it does not involve jumping off cliffs.

Chieh is a 2L who was born in Taipei but spent her teenage years in Southern California. She graduated from UC Irvine in 2008 with a major in Criminology.

Prior to law school, Chieh worked at Google for five years as a legal specialist, handling content removal requests. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Chieh teaches yoga for the Berkeley Yoga Project. She spent her 1L summer at the Central District of California as a judicial extern for Judge David O. Carter.

In her free time, Chieh enjoys cooking, hiking, yoga, climbing, cycling, backpacking, and anything and everything outdoors.

Austin Uhler is a 2L from San Diego, CA. He graduated from Georgetown University in 2010 with a major in English.

Before coming to law school, he worked at Livingsocial.com as a technical recruiter. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Austin is a leader of the Berkeley Immigration Group’s volunteering efforts at the ICE detention facility in Richmond, CA. He spent his 1L summer at the Oakland Unified School District, in their Office of the General Counsel.

In his free time, Austin enjoys backpacking, tennis, and tickling kittens–right on their tummies.

Lindsay Walter is a 3L from La Crescenta, CA. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 2013 with majors in Political Economy and Environmental Studies.

In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Lindsay is the symposium editor of the Ecology Law Quarterly and a Notes and Comments editor for the California Law Review. She spent her 1L summer externing for the Honorable Harry Pregerson of the Ninth Circuit in Los Angeles, CA. During the 2L academic year, Lindsay wrote a report on the criminalization of homelessness as a member of the Berkeley Law Policy Advocacy Clinic, and she worked at the Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division in San Francisco. Most recently, Lindsay spent her 2L summer at Sidley Austin in Washington D.C.

In her free time, Lindsay enjoys hiking, playing tennis, and oil painting.

Philip is a 2L from Austin, TX. He graduated with honors from The University of Texas at Austin in 2014 with a double major in government and history as well as minors in business foundations and liberal arts honors.

Before coming to law school, he worked at the Texas Attorney General’s Office as a legal intern and then at Arnold Public Affairs as an associate during the 83rd Texas Legislature. In addition to competing on the Berkeley Law Appellate Advocacy team, Philip is a member of the California Law Review, and a Senior Network Editor for the Berkeley Business Law Journal. He has also previously served as the Vice President for Communications of the Berkeley Patent Law Society, and as an Associate Editor for the Berkeley Technology Law Journal as well. He spent his 1L summer with the California Attorney General’s Office in San Francisco, CA and will be splitting his 2L summer between Jackson Walker, LLP in Austin, TX and Bracewell & Giuliani, LLP in Houston, TX.

In his free time, Philip enjoys sampling the many food options of the Bay Area, watching college football, and kicking back to enjoy a nice glass of wine.
