Guinnane focuses on economic history, particularly the demographic and financial development of Europe and North America, and the role of institutions in shaping long-term economic change. He is the Philip Golden Bartlett Professor of Economics at Yale University, where he has been a faculty member since 1993. His research examines economic and demographic history, with particular attention to households, migration, credit cooperatives, and legal institutions. He earned his PhD in economics from Stanford University and held earlier academic positions as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Princeton University.
