International Arbitration Association at Berkeley Law is hosting an event titled “The Origins and Evolution of the International Arbitration Practice in the United States.” This event will offer an in-depth exploration of the historical background and the international economic and legal trends that have shaped the development of international arbitration practice in the United States. It aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the legislative, judicial, and economic forces that have influenced the evolution of this critical field. (RSVP here

We are honored to welcome Steven L. Smith as the keynote speaker for this event. Mr. Smith is a distinguished international arbitrator with over 41 years of experience in international law and dispute resolution. He currently serves as an independent arbitrator at Steven L. Smith Global Dispute Resolution LLC. Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Smith has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field of international law. Notable accolades include the 2014 Riesenfeld Award from the Miller Institute for his exceptional impact on international legal scholarship and practice and the 2024 Warren Christopher Award from the California Lawyers Association for his distinguished service and significant achievements in international law. We’re also especially excited to welcome him back to Berkeley Law, where he played a key role as the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Berkeley Journal of International Law (BJIL).

Beyond the educational content, this event offers a unique opportunity for students to engage directly with an esteemed practitioner in international arbitration. Attendees will have the chance to participate in a lively Q&A session, enabling them to deepen their understanding of the field and seek career advice from a seasoned expert.
