The Legal Beat: Paths to Media Lawyering with Davis Wright Tremaine
Wednesday, September 24, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Event Navigation

News journalism, studios, networks, books, magazines, internet platforms and more require media attorneys to navigate unique and evolving challenges on speech and content. How should law students prepare for potential careers in media law? What is the scope of what we call “media law,” and how are the boundaries changing? Why is it important to incorporate media law knowledge into all of our practices?
Join Mass Media @ Berkeley Law and the Berkeley Journal of Entertainment and Sports Law for a discussion with Thomas Burke and Sarah Burns, attorneys of the renowned media group of Davis Wright Tremaine. They will share what it means to pursue a career defending free speech and fighting government secrecy through changing arcs of politics, information access, and technology. Whether you are newly curious about or deeply committed to the field of media law, this is an unparalleled opportunity to learn from two distinguished attorneys handling high-stakes matters of speech and content.
Lunch will be provided for those who RSVP.
These events are open only to UC Berkeley Law students, faculty, and staff, unless otherwise noted.
