Wednesday, October 8, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

flyer for Mass Media @ Berkeley Law event New(s) Voices: The Legal Rights and Challenges of Student/ Campus-Based Journalism

Student activists and journalists have always played a pivotal role in challenging injustice, holding institutions accountable, and insisting on improved versions of society. While their voices and reporting are often upheld in retrospect as gold-star examples of the country’s values, student dissenters are subject to power dynamics specific to their enrollment and relation to an academic institution. In addition, student reporters face increasing pressure as schools are pressed to moderate politicized notions of acceptable speech. This moderated conversation between Jim Wheaton of the First Amendment Project and Tanya Perez of the EdSource California Student Journalism Corps will discuss what rights student journalists have when affiliated with an academic institution, how they can protect themselves while pursuing the truth, and what role attorneys can play in facilitating their stories.

Lunch will be served for those who RSVP
