Students at Berkeley Law often come in wanting to effect some kind of change in the world: defending communities against state violence, preserving our planet’s habitability for human life, and on and on. Unfortunately, today’s legal education can prove deactivating. You’ll definitely learn the law, and if you’re lucky you’ll learn something about how it got here. But it’s much harder to find spaces devoted to the education you probably want the most: what the law could be in the future, and what it would take to make our visions into reality.

If that sounds like you, come join LPE at Berkeley Law for a conversation with Professor Diana Reddy about history, possibility, and the law. We’ll focus on the labor movement, labor law, and the right to strike, using two of Professor Reddy’s articles as a starting point: After the Law of Apolitical Economy: Reclaiming the Normative Stakes of Labor Unions; and “There Is No Such Thing as an Illegal Strike”: Reconceptualizing the Strike in Law and Political Economy.

This is the second part of our two-part series “Seeing the Forest and the Trees Through LPE”. After last week’s conversation with Professor Syed about what the law is generally (i.e., “the trees”), this conversation will help us zoom out to the bigger picture (i.e., “the forest”) without losing sight of their interrelation and our relationship to them as law students and future lawyers.

Lunch provided! Please RSVP here. Co-sponsored by the Berkeley Journal of Employment and Labor Law (BJELL).
