Event Navigation

Join us for a conversation with Hamisi Mzari, Kenya Country Programme Manager at Justice Defenders and Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Founded in 2007 as African Prisons Project, Justice Defenders is a UK charity and U.S. nonprofit that brings legal education into prisons in Kenya and Uganda. It trains incarcerated people and prison officers side by side to become paralegals and lawyers. Together, they run legal offices inside prisons, and through university partnerships they also earn law degrees. The organization’s work was featured on CNN’s The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper.
Hamisi joined Justice Defenders as a volunteer in 2014 while incarcerated and earned his law degree through the program. He became one of its first formerly incarcerated graduates admitted to the Kenyan bar. He’ll discuss access to justice from inside prison walls and what law students can learn from a movement led by people with lived experience of the justice system.
