Please join the UC Berkeley Criminal Law & Justice Center for a discussion with Professor Jerzy Sarnecki on “Criminal Justice Reform: A Comparative Study of California and Sweden.”
Jerzy Sarnecki was born in Poland and came to Sweden as a refugee in 1969. He studied sociology at Stockholm University and initially worked as a youth worker, later as an researcher for the City of Stockholm. In 1978, he earned his PhD with a doctoral dissertation in sociology on municipal youth centers. From 1978 to 1993, he worked as a researcher and subsequently as Director of Research at the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå). In 1993, Sarnecki was appointed by the Swedish government Professor of General Criminology at Stockholm University. Since his retirement from Stockholm University in 2015, he has served as Senior Professor at the University of Gävle and the Institute for Futures Studies, Stockholm. Since 2005, Sarnecki has been Co-Chair of the Jury for the Stockholm Prize in Criminology.
This conversation will explore California and Sweden’s approaches to criminal justice reform, examining how these two systems have developed distinct frameworks for addressing crime, punishment, and rehabilitation.
