“The Racial Muslim: When Racism Quashes Religious Freedom”
w/Sahar Aziz
Professor of Law and Chancellor’s Social Justice Scholar
Rutgers Law School

Muslims in America have found religious liberty in practice to be more myth than reality.
Discriminatory actions targeting Muslims are considered rational and patriotic because Islam is placed in the realm of politics, not religion.  That Muslims are experiencing overt discrimination at a time when contestation over religious liberty is a national issue demonstrates religious liberty is not equally available to all faiths.  The result is the social construction of The Racial Muslim.  Professor Aziz demonstrates problematizes American religious freedom norms by interrogating how and why a country founded on religious liberty produces such overt prejudice and discrimination against an ostensible religious minority.

Ruth Chance was the only woman in her Boalt Hall class of 1931. That, alone, is an accomplishment. But Chance went on to do much more. A social commentator, historian, sociologist, and social justice crusader, Chance worked tirelessly on behalf of children and youth against poverty, racism, and class discrimination.

This beloved lecture series honors Chance by inviting social justice practitioners to Berkeley Law to discuss current issues and cases with students. At these gatherings, we break bread and brainstorm about community law practice, private practice in the public interest, access to health care, the digital divide, international human rights, criminal justice, reproductive justice, children’s advocacy, social entrepreneurism, and so much more.
