Health and Life Science Law Society (HaLS): “Public Health Law and the Political Determinants of Health” – Professor Marice Ashe

Thursday, October 2, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Health and Life Science Law Society (HaLS) is a student organization at at Berkeley Law dedicated to supporting students interested in biotechnology law, health policy, and related areas in the life sciences. We host guest speaker events, networking opportunities, and mentorship programs while fostering a strong community for anyone exploring these fields. All students are welcome to join!

Please join us on Oct. 2nd, 1-2pm in Room 110 for a discussion with Professor Marice Ashe on “Public Health Law and the Political Determinants of Health.”

“We hear a lot about the very real problems related to the politicalization of science. But truth be told, Public Health Law has always been enmeshed in politics – even before COVID and the current MAHA movement. This presentation will explore how institutional inequities including structural racism are the main drivers of health outcomes across the nation. We will discuss the constitutional basis for public health law and the built-in tensions between individual liberty and government’s responsibility to protect the common good that animate politics to this very day. Come prepared to add to the conversation and debate the role of law in managing through our current challenges.”

Please RSVP here by EOD Tuesday, September 30th, 2025. Lunch will be provided!
