State of Silence/Estado de Silencio explores the limits of freedom of the press in Mexico, following four journalists who risk their lives to report on the collusion between organized crime and corrupt officials. From the reporters’ perspective, the documentary shows how they must navigate zones of silence and powerful entities to expose corruption and violence. A panel and Q&A will follow the film featuring:
- Santiago Maza, director and filmmaker
- Michael Bolden, dean, Berkeley Journalism – opening remarks
- Michael Reed-Hurtado, director of governance and operations, Guernica Centre for International Justice
- Omar Gomez Trejo, former lead prosecutor for the investigation and litigation of the Ayotzinapa disappearances
- Anayansi Diaz-Cortes, senior reporter and producer at Reveal, Center for Investigative Reporting – moderator
