Event Navigation

Join the Berkeley Homeless Union, Disability Rights Education Defense Fund, and UC Berkeley National Lawyers Guild Chapter for a practical training on how to use the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to help unhoused people access public programs and services. This session will feature Erin Neff, a senior attorney with the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund, who will provide guidance on navigating the ADA’s “interactive process” to secure reasonable accommodations for people experiencing homelessness.
The training will focus on real-world strategies for advocates, law students, and community organizers assisting unhoused individuals with disabilities. Topics will include identifying disability-related barriers to public programs, drafting effective accommodation requests, engaging with government agencies during the interactive process, and understanding common legal arguments cities use to deny accommodations.
Participants will leave with practical tools for helping unhoused people access disability-accessible shelter, services, and other public programs. The event is co-sponsored by the National Lawyers Guild UC Berkeley Chapter. All students, advocates, and community members interested in disability rights and housing justice are welcome.
These events are open only to UC Berkeley Law students, faculty, and staff, unless otherwise noted.
Events are wheelchair accessible. For disability-related accommodations, contact the organizer of the event. Advance notice is kindly requested.
