CSLS Speaker Series: “The Children of Immigrants Ineligible for Naturalization and Historical Struggle for Birthright Citizenship”

Monday, February 9, 2026 @ 12:15 pm - 2:00 pm

Featuring Hardeep Dhillon, Assistant Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania

This presentation explores the early history of attacks on birthright citizenship for the children of immigrants born to non-citizen parents following the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment. Moving beyond court precedent, it contextualizes the political landscape in which city, state, and federal officials used their discretionary authority and judicial power to challenge the rights of U.S.-born children.

Reception: Lunch 12:15-12:45 p.m. in the Kadish Library
