The criminal legal system we confront today is the product of nearly 1000 years of development during which new institutions, new powers, and new myths about crime and punishment have been installed in response to periodic crises originating in the political and economic conflicts of society. The result is a kind of carceral leviathan that can appear in many ways to suit the needs of the time and overcome moral and practical criticisms. In the lecture, Professor Simon will review this history and how it continues to be relevant today to those seeking to reform or even abolish it.
Jonathan Simon graduated from Berkeley law with a JD and a PhD in the Jurisprudence and Social Policy program. He has taught at the University of Michigan, the University of Miami, and, since 2003 as a professor of law at Berkeley. Simon is the author of three books and many articles on the criminal legal system in the United States and its relationship to shifts in American society and democracy.
