This session explores the evolution of professional identity and the vital importance of finding or creating workplaces that allow us to step into our power and honor our purpose. While lawyers play a fundamental role in upholding rights and responsibilities, the work of social justice requires more than just legal expertise. We will discuss how to align your career with your values and why it is essential for the “superheroes” of the legal profession to prioritize self-care to sustain their long-term impact and well-being.
Luz E. Herrera is a recognized attorney, law professor, and advocate for equitable access to legal services. Her career reflects a commitment to social justice and empowerment of underserved communities when navigating legal institutions. After starting her own practice and founding Community Lawyers, Inc. – a nonprofit tax-exempt organization facilitating legal information and services in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, Luz began a career as a clinical legal educator. She has worked at Harvard Law School, Fowler School of Law at Chapman University, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, UC Irvine School of Law, and after 10 years in an administrative role as a dean for experiential education at UCLA School of Law and Texas A&M University, she now focuses on teaching professional responsibility and transactional law clinics. Luz’s scholarship is influenced by her experience as a solo practitioner, her life experiences as a child of immigrant parents, and as a first-generation student that graduated from Stanford University and Harvard Law School. Prof. Herrera was born in Tijuana, Mexico, grew up in Whittier, California and currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas.
