Monday, March 16, 2026 @ 12:50 pm - 2:00 pm
Event Navigation
Join the Berkeley Homeless Union and Berkeley chapter of the National Lawyers Guild for a discussion about the historic injunction halting the City of Berkeley’s planned eviction of the encampment at Eighth and Harrison Streets. The injunction is believed to be the first court order in the country since the Supreme Court’s decision in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson to halt an encampment eviction under the protections of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Speakers will explain the legal strategy behind the case, the role of disability rights law in protecting unhoused people, and how race, gender, and disability shape the experience of homelessness and enforcement policies. The event will also explore how organizing by unhoused residents and the Berkeley Homeless Union helped bring the case forward and what it may mean for future civil rights litigation.
Community members, students, advocates, and anyone interested in housing justice are encouraged to attend.
These events are open only to UC Berkeley Law students, faculty, and staff, unless otherwise noted.
Events are wheelchair accessible. For disability-related accommodations, contact the organizer of the event. Advance notice is kindly requested.
