Join the ACLU’s Nicole Ozer as she provides a behind-the-scenes look at the what, why, and how of social movement development to ensure that technology works for the people and supports, rather than undermines, social justice in the digital age.
Nicole Ozer is the Technology and Civil Liberties Director for the ACLU in California and has led the organization’s cutting-edge, intersectional work to defend and promote civil liberties and civil rights in the digital world since 2004. Nicole sets the strategic vision for the Technology and Civil Liberties Program and its integrated advocacy work in the courts, communities, with companies, and policymakers to maximize impact and promote lasting systemic change in both the government and private sector. Nicole is a nationally recognized expert on issues at the intersection of privacy and government surveillance and free speech and the Internet. From 2007-2012, Nicole developed and led the ACLU’s national online privacy campaign, Demand Your dotRights. In 2012, she designed the local surveillance reform strategies now used across the country (now ACLU CCOPS campaign). In 2015, she developed and led the campaign to enact the landmark California Electronic Communications Privacy Act (CalECPA) and require a warrant for government access to any electronic information. In 2018, she spearheaded the development of the ACLU’s integrated advocacy work on face surveillance.
The BCLT/BTLJ Law & Tech Speaker Series features local practitioners, bringing real world experience and practical legal knowledge to Berkeley Law students.
